| Our Future
In December 2001, the Fraser Health Authority (FHA)
came together with a strong mandate to develop a sustainable health
system that would meet the needs of the people living from Burnaby
to Boston Bar.
In early February 2002, the FHA began work on a Clinical
Services Directional Plan to support the development of a high quality,
cost-effective integrated health care system. The "Directions
for Change" plan was released in April and provides the framework
for a system that will more equitably serve all of the region's residents
health care needs.
Hospital's in the FHA were divided into five categories
ranging from community health centres to provincial hospitals.
Royal Columbian Hospital was confirmed as the provincial
referral facility for the Fraser Health Authority and the location
for the delivery of many of the highly specialized health care services.
It will be the reference centre for best practices for other hospitals
in the FHA. In addition to its regional referral services, Royal
Columbian will continue to provide:
- Emergency and trauma services with physicians certified
with emergency medicine;
- Advanced diagnostics such as magnetic resonance
imaging (MRI), nuclear medicine and cardiac catheterization;
- Higher levels (i.e.sub-specialities) of almost all
Medical and Surgical services;
- Tertiary and high secondary services for patients
including highly specialized services such as vascular surgery,
thoracic surgery and neurosurgery.
